College Students are Left Behind

Madison, WI—Thirty-three members of the Wisconsin State Legislature released a letter to UW System President Kevin Reilly today announcing their opposition to recently proposed restrictions on UW segregated fees. With the best interest of students in mind, these legislators have expressed concerns related to proposed policy changes, noting negative impacts on the out-of-classroom experiences provided by student organizations via segregated fee funding.
Madison—Students from throughout the UW System will gather at the Board of Regents meeting on Thursday to challenge a report by the Allocable Segregated Fees Review Committee. The report is expected to include a policy proposal that drastically limits the growth and operation of UW student organizations system-wide.
Madison—Governor Jim Doyle visited the UW-Madison campus today in order to sign AB-280, also known as “Michelle's Law.” The bill, passed after strong student lobbying and with bipartisan support in the legislature, will protect students' enrollment-based health insurance when they are forced to take medical leaves from school.
West Bend, WI - UW-Washington County students are coordinating efforts with students from around the state to partake in a Gender Neutral Restroom Day of Action on 11/20 around Trans Day of Remembrance. In an effort to demonstrate their dedication to ending harassment and discrimination, students are working to re-sign existing bathrooms to gender neutrality on 16 University of Wisconsin campuses around the state.
Oshkosh, WI - The United Council of UW Students will be holding its 12th annual Women's Leadership Conference at the site of its first, at UW-Oshkosh. That one-day event attracted 70 student activists from across the state. This year the conference has expanded into a three-day event and is expected to attract over 250 students from across the state. The conference will feature a range of workshops and will highlight three major speakers including Loretta Ross of Sister Song.
