Final Vote on Compassionate Care for Rape Victims to be Held

Vote Wednesday to be preceded by show of support outside Assembly.

Madison, WI-The Wisconsin State Assembly has announced that they will be holding the vote for AB 377, also known as the Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Act or CCRV, this Wednesday. Supported by 82% of Wisconsinites, the bill comes to a vote after almost six years of work by a coalition of supporters that includes United Council and other organizations statewide as well as previous bipartisan votes in the State Senate and Assembly. This vote is the last step before reaching Governor Doyle's desk.

The vote will be preceded by a coalition show of support for rape survivors and for a "yes" vote in front of the Assembly Wednesday morning. This show of support will be held outside of the Assembly Chambers on the second floor west wing of the Capitol at 10:30am.

The bill ensures that victims of rape or incest will be provided with information about and access to emergency contraception in all Wisconsin emergency rooms. Besides making emergency contraception available, this bill protects survivor's rights through educating them on their right to report assaults and provides information about resources like the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) that can help gather evidence to pursue legal actions.
